What is Hypnotherapy?

Hypnotherapy is the use of hypnosis as a therapy. Hypnosis itself is a natural and relaxed state that occurs to all of us throughout the day. It can happen when watching TV, reading a book, listening to music or even driving a car. It is an altered state of awareness during which we are neither awake nor asleep, it is almost a day dream type of feeling where you are aware of things around you but in an altered way.


Hypnotherapy is a powerful combination of hypnosis and therapy, the purpose of which is to enable you to connect with your inner resources to find meaningful and helpful alternatives to your present unsatisfactory way of behaving, thinking or feeling.

Hypnotherapy is an effective treatment for changing the way you think, feel or behave, by using techniques to rest your conscious mind it becomes easy to communicate with your subconscious mind. This is facilitated through the therapist encouraging you into a state of deep relaxation within your body and your mind.


Hypnotherapy can be used to treat a whole host of conditions, but is commonly used for anxiety & stress, smoking cessation, weight loss, increased confidence, IBS, habits and alcohol control. In essence, hypnosis is a state of deep relaxation – so whatever your issue, almost everyone finds hypnotherapy to be a fully relaxing and enjoyable experience. It is based on the preferred future, not the past, and incorporates your own personal goals. It isn’t what you see on the TV, where people perform tasks they would not normally do. However, hypnosis is very powerful, it can greatly reduce anxiety, help you to overcome insomnia, and increase confidence.


It will also help you understand your brain, and why you react to situations in the way you do sometimes. But most importantly, it will help you to make the desired changes to your life. 

How does it work?

Hypnotherapy is not a deep sleep, but a state of relaxation, you are fully aware of everything around you may hear the cars on the road outside for example, but your mind will be enjoying the relaxed feeling so much, sounds won’t really bother you.


Once you are fully relaxed, the analytical part of your brain stops and your subconscious, the part which is open to change, will become very aware.


For example, if you want to consciously overcome your fear of spiders and have tried everything but are still terrified, it is your subconscious mind that is holding on to the phobia, therefore trying to release the fear using your conscious will alone is extremely difficult if not totally impossible.


As your body and conscious mind relaxes I can talk to your subconscious mind and reassure it and at the same time encourage the unwanted belief about spiders along with the fear to be released.


What will happen in the Hypnotherapy session?

In the session, hypnosis brings about a deep sense of relaxation which allows your attention to drift away from your current worries and concerns. I will then help you to achieve a deep state of mental and physical relaxation and slowly introduce positive suggestions to you which will help you make the desired changes.


Anyone can be hypnotised, but only if they want to be… During hypnosis, you won’t say or do anything that you wouldn’t ordinarily do. You are under your own control at all times!

Wearing headphones during the therapy heightens the experience of hypnosis and allows the helpful suggestions to be accepted very quickly at a very deep level.
